About the classes and how to be multi-classed

There are 6 basic classes: the 4 classic (Mage, Cleric, Warrior and
thief), and 2 other particular (Druid and
Monk).

Be careful! The maximum levels you can gain in one class depend on
your race. Choose your race to have one class minimum in which you may
gain 50 levels.

There are 2 privileged classes: Patryn (evil) and Sartan (good)
(that will be implemented very soon)
From level 40 you can choose to join one of these privileged classes,
which will depend on your alignement.

Note: The druid and monk classes are not easy for a player who doesn't
know the world of Nexus.

If you want to be multi-classed, just go in the one of the guild you want
to learn and type gain. You can have a maximum of 3 classes.
Monk are always single-classed.
The order in which you choose your classes is important. For exemple, a
warrior-mage has more hp and less mana than a mage-warrior. There is also
some skills that can be learned only if you are of the right primary class.

WARNING : Cleric and driud can't never use non-blunt weapons even
if their primary class is warrior.

The life of a ghost (start when you die)

After you die you come back as a ghost. Ghosts can't carry anything
or open doors... But they can POSSESS other mobiles. Ghosts can only
possess mobiles that have less than half the hit points the ghost has.
The mobile gets a saving throw so it won't always work.

When you are a Ghost you need to be resurrected to play again normaly.
To do so you need to find your corpse and bring it to the medics
in the healing room at the chapel. There you just have to drop your
corpse. To carry your corpse, ask another player or possess a mobile.

If you can't get your corpse back, or don't want to bother to get it
back, you can go near the medics and they will resurrect you (but they
won't if you are possessing a mobile : " resurrecting a dog ?? yea fine
but it looks well alive for me...".

If you get your corpse resurrected you will lost 50000 xp.

If you are resurected as a Ghost, (corpse is destroyed) you will
loose 100000 xp and you have a chance (increasing with level)
to loose one constitution point.

Dying as a Ghost won't lower your xp or your stats and you can do it
has much as you want if it make you happy !

How to become more powerful

Having enough experience points is a condition to gain levels (but not
always the single one). A 100k exp points is needed in order to gain the
next level (whatever your class or current level is). Of course killing
the same mob will not pay as much for a high level player as it does for a
low level one. For exemple, killing a mob of the same level as you will
give you an average of 3k exp if the mob has no special bonus.

Be patient, levels do not necessarily come overnight. Fast gains are
usuallly risky and lead to death too often.

As soon as you gain a level the 100k exp needed are removed from your
total amount, that you can see by typing "score" at the prompt.

Killing mobs is one way to gain xp but not the only one. Moving around
in the world is another one. The less visited a place is, the more xp
you will get if you visit it.
Quest may also give you xp.

levels gain

There are 50 mortal levels.

But be careful! You can not reach the level 50 in each class. That
depends on your race. To gain a level you must have enough experience
points, go see your guildmaster and type GAIN.
For some levels the (mage, cleric, warrior or thief) guildmaster may
ask you for an object (this is a small quest you have to perform) and
giving him the object will make you gain automatically.
From level 10 on the druids (and monks) are requested to do a challenge
with an other druid (or monk) mobile. For that the player has to go in
a challenge room near his guildmaster and type NOD.

WARNING : Druid will need the spells Flame blade and Tree travel if you
want to advance past level 10 !

There are 10 special levels.

... for the 2 privileged classes: Patryn (evil) and Satran (good).
These classes are only available from level 40 in one of the six
basic classes.

There are 10 wizard levels.
There is an other help for that.

Note: If you want to know your levels in your classes, type: level
<class>.

Lerning skills and spells

Each time you gain a level, you will get some practices. You can use
them to learn spells or skills in whatever classes you have. There
is also a number of skills that can be learned by everyone.

The number of practices is determined by your wisdom.
The learning percentage is determined by your intelligence.

Note: For warrior, thief or monk, don't forget that you have 50 levels
to learn all your skills ... Be patient!
If you want to know your practices in your class, type:
practice <class>.

What kind of weapons you can use.

You have to learn how to use a type of weapon if you don't want to have
a really big malus when using a weapon. It can be done for a small fee at
the Paladin in the drill field (near the east gate of DaggerFord).

Here is a list of weapon types with exemples :

Stab : dagger,small sword... (C,D)
Smash : club, staff...
Slash : short sword, long sword... (C,D,M)
Pierce : knife, spear, javelin... (C,D,M)
Cleave : Axe... (C,D,M)
Bludgeon : Mace... (M)
Crush : flail, morningstar, warhammer (M)
Whip : whips (M)
Smith : Big two-handed words (M,C,D,T)

M : not usable by mage
C,D : not usable by druid or cleric
T : not usable by thief

The weight you are carrying is important for your armor class.
The first 20% of weight are free, after that it will give you a
malus.

Introduction

If this is the first time you play a mud, read the following: as in any
role playing game you are in command of a character whom you just created.
You can move your character around the world by typing directions (n, s, w, e)
at the prompt. You can also talk with other players, first type WHO to know
who is visible at the time being, then use the command TELL to talk to anybody.
exemple: >tell Aldur hello

You can have a lot more social interaction as this is a role playing oriented
game. The help SOCIAL will give you a list of the different social commands
that are availabale to you.

As you entered the world your character is starting at level 1. You will need
to harvest experience points (by killing mobiles) in order to gain levels. The
more levels you have the more powerful your character will be. The command
SCORE will tell your hits points, mana points, mouvement points, exp points,
how much more is needed until you can gain a new level, etc...
The ATTRIBUTE command will give you more informations about your character,
the spells actualy affecting him and so on...You might need to get some
exp before that command will be available to you. After some levels you
will be able to see your stats, that will appear when you type ATTRIBUTE.

The world of NEXUS is hard to survive in, so don't get mad if you die from
time to time. The death system will allow you to walk the realm of ghosts!

Here are a few things that should help you get past your first few
levels.

Most important:
- People of the same race will assist each other in battles.
This means that attacking a creature when others of it's kind
are around is not very wise unless you can take them all on.
- Always consider mobiles you want to kill. For this use the command
CONSIDER.
- Be PATIENT, levels do not necessarily come overnight. Fast gains
are usually risky and lead to death too often.
- If in doubt about something, ask someone.
- If visible, gods are there to help you (within limits of course!).

Others:
- Cityguards and Royal Guards do jump into battles. They will jump
in on the side of the person with the higher alignment. All
newbies have an alignment of zero.
- There are rules concerning Player Killing. Read them !
- Some skills you only need to invest one practice into, and then you can
improve them with use. This especially applies to monks and thieves.

Mages:
- Learn Magic Missile, it helps.

Clerics:
- Avoid getting lower level version of spells if you think that you can
get to a high enough level to use a more powerful version without it. For
exemple practice cure serious instead of cure light if you can get by
without cure light.

Druids:
- Learn Tree Travel at 10th, or else you won't be able to advance past
that level.
- Learn Flame Blade, or else getting past 10th will be a real pain.

Areas that you can go to at low levels:
- DaggerFord (kill cats and dogs at first level)
- The forest at the east of DaggerFord and the monastery to the
north of the forest.
- The area south of DaggerFord and the Dwarf Kingdom

Areas where you realy don't want to go at low levels:
- The swamp at the west of DaggerFord (Especialy in building).
- The mountains to the north-west of DaggerFord.
- Any other planes ! (So if a friend want to make you visit the
Abyss think twice...)

Note: grouping is a good idea whatever your class or level!
read the NEWS on the board at the reception to know about
the new features of the game.

introduction

Things you should know:

- hit points are ad&d like, not diku like
- there are 150+ spells, almost 30 skills, more on the way.
- many monsters have special routines.
- most monsters that might have poison do.
- poison is very dangerous.
- some poisonous monsters have instantly fatal poison. take care!
- equipment can be damaged, by spells and combat.
- dragons breath, doing lots of damage to people and equipment.
- non pc followers only get 1/2 the exp they would get if they weren't
charmed. The other 1/2 is lost.
- some monsters are too big to be bashed. In general, dragons, most "huge"
things, purple worm, etc, are all non-bashable.
- sneak allows you to avoid aggressive monsters.
- monsters develop hatreds very quickly, and will try to hunt you down
and kill you for hurting them.
- kangaroos hate all kinds of enfan.
- most mobs that should see in the dark do.
- some monsters are immune to the things you would expect them to be
immune to.
- some monsters are also resistant to certain attacks and/or susceptible
to others (resist = 1/2 damage, susc = 2* dam)
- monsters HELP each other out. They don't sit by and watch.
- playing characters are very powerful: they have a lot of spells, attacks
and skills.
- monsters are weaker individually, most of the time. However, they are not
as stupid as on other muds, they tend to band together. They are tougher,
because other monsters will sometimes come to each other's rescue.
- rule of thumb: Grouping is a good idea.
- it is easier to play mages and thieves if you are patient, but grouping
help speed the acquiring of levels.

Nexus's goals for the different classes:

Fighters: powerful at lower levels, much less useful at higher levels.
Clerics : reasonably powerful and useful all along.
Mages : weak at lower levels, more powerful at higher levels.
Thieves: Good for scouting, very nice when grouped.
Monks: Weak at lower levels, more powerful at higher levels.
Druids: Medium at all levels, like clerics.

Note: Spellcasting is harder to do in combat. Generally, the more
powerful the spell is, the harder it is to cast in combat. Magic
missile, acid blast, shocking grasp, cause light, serious, critical,
are all fairly easy to cast in combat.

While your equipment can be damamged by spells and such, there
are some things you can do to minimize the damage. #1, if you are
fighting something that does fire damage, being immune or resistant to
fire yourself will help your equipment out as well. Good saving throw
will also reduce the amount of damage.

Where to raise in level and practice skills

The Guildhouse is the place where mortals may go to escape the
troubles and perils of a cruel world. Each guild is heavily guarded
(HA!), so that only members may enter the building. Guilds are also
the places where people come to learn and practice the skills of their
trade.

The various guilds are located east of the chapel.
The Monk's guild is farther away, east and north from DaggerFord.
The Druid's guild is in the elven forest.
The 10th+ level druid guild is inside the colossal tree.
You MUST have the spell 'tree travelling' to get
inside your guild, so be warned. You almost definitely need the spell
'Flame Blade' to win the competition required for each level.

Note: these are multi-room complexes.. once you enter the entrance, type
EXIT, to see where the bar is, and you can get from the bar to the
practice/guildmaster area.

Once at the guildmaster, you can practice spells and skills.

Lots of other skills can be learned from specials mobiles but you will
have to find them by yourself.

grouping

Usage : GROUP [player]

If you are a group member, then you will share experience points for
killing monsters equally among the group. Experience points will only
be shared among group members that are in the same location, at the
time of the killing blow. Sharing is regardless of whether the group
members have been participating in the fight.

If you group with people much higher than yourself, you won't gain
full xp.

Generaly, you can more xp grouped than alone. For exemple, a mob
that give 3000 xp when killed may give 2000 xp to two grouped
players. (For a total of 4K xp).

Group with no argument show a list of people with whom you are
grouped.

To make a group, a "leader" must be selected. All members of the group
must then "follow" the leader using the FOLLOW command. The leader
should NOT follow anyone at all! The leader can now toggle group
membership for each player in the group, by using "group
<player_name>". The leader should remember to include himself in
the group.

Example:

Quifael and Redferne wish to group with Dragon.

Quifael : "follow dragon"
Redferne: "follow dragon"
(Dragon should be following no one but himself)
Dragon : "group dragon"
Dragon : "group redferne"
Dragon : "group quifael"

Later when Dragon gets upset at Quifael (because he is sleeping all the
time) he types : "Group Quifael" to kick Quifael out of the group.
